Compare the written offer before making a request
Separate recurring pay from one-time payments and conditional compensation. A joining bonus may have a repayment clause, and an equity figure may describe a grant that vests over several years. Put the dates and conditions beside each amount so you can compare offers on the same basis.
List the terms that matter to your decision, including the start date, location and any deadline to respond. Ask the recruiter to clarify unclear terms in writing. Once the offer is clear, choose the one or two changes you can explain with a specific reason. Keep the original offer and any revised version for comparison.
